First time trying to do a skincare routine and don’t know where to begin? With all the products and trends out there, it is overwhelming to know where to start.

Fortunately, you don’t need a complicated routine to care for your skin. You can come up with a simple routine that’s suitable for your skin by learning some of the skincare mistakes beginners make.

  1. Using too Many Skin Products

One of the most common skincare routine mistakes beginners make is using too many products at once. Cleansers, toners, serums, exfoliators, masks and treatment products can be tempting, but you don’t need all of them.

How many skincare products should a beginner use?

Start with the basics:

  • Gentle cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

When your skin is used to the simple routine, you can add products if you want, and they can be tailored to the skin problems you are experiencing.

2. Over-Exfoliating the Skin

Scrubbing may be able to eliminate dead skin cells, but over doing it could also turn into one of the skin-care mistakes that cause irritation of the skin.

Your skin might appear rough, sensitive, and itchy if you exfoliate too often.

Tip: Don’t overdo it with exfoliating because you think the more, the merrier. Select a product that’s ideal for your skin and follow the instructions on the packaging.

3. Failure to Moisturize If You Have Oily Skin

Should oily skin use moisturizer?

Yes! Even if you have oily skin, it doesn’t mean your skin is not in need of hydration. You can be oily and still need moisturizer in your routine.

For those with oily and acne-prone skin, choose a light weight moisturizer that isn’t greasy and feels good on the skin.

4. Forgetting Sunscreen

Leaving out SPF Protecting skin from the sun is a simple addition to a plain skin care routine. Using UV protection for your skin is necessary every day as direct UV exposure can lead to faster aging and sun damage.

Tip: Put on a broad-spectrum SPF as the last step of your morning skin care regimen.

5. Changing Products Too Quickly

Using a different product on your skin every two or three days can be confusing and may lead to more irritation.

Instead you can  add in your products slowly. If you’re curious on how to avoid skincare mistakes as a beginner, here’s a tip! Introduce one new product at a time.

6. Ignoring Signs of Skin Irritation

Not all products are right for everyone. If you experience excessive redness, itchiness, burning sensation, or tightness on your skin after applying a product, don’t just assume that you should “push through it”.

Some beginner skincare mistakes that can damage skin include the use of skin care products that clearly irritate the skin.

Take a break and reevaluate your routine if your skin is not being kind to you. Seek the advice of a dermatologist if the irritation continues to be brutal.

How to Avoid Skincare Mistakes as a Beginn

You don’t need to follow every skincare trend. Keep your routine simple and focus on consistency.
